Random bits of life

Coming off a great run Monday, I was feeling good about today’s workout until about 20 minutes into my run…utter and complete failure. Something was off and I just could not muster the strength to finish the run.

Was it because I was outdoors? It is kinda on the warm side today. Dehydrated? Possibly. Tired? Most likely. I putzed around last night until midnight (bad, I know). Maybe I slept “wrong”?

Excuses aside, this just means I try again. Maybe it’s a good thing I’ve given myself until November?

Tomorrow is another day and today just proved to be a slight pebble on my road to…total and complete fitness, cardio health, whatever.

I FINALLY got some validation from The Husband the other day – he did say I looked “thinner” – and I have felt a difference. There isn’t as much junk in the trunk as when I first started. Well, maybe not less junk, but the junk isn’t bouncing around as much. (Is that TMI?)

Motivating song of the week:

Miss Murder by AFI

500 weeks ago I was living in Belmont and only 1 month into the job that I have now and I had been dating The Husband for about 3 months.

500 days ago I was chiding The Husband for his horrendous grammar.

500 hours ago I was celebrating The Husband’s birthday with friends at Nightlife.

500 minutes ago I was happily sleeping in my cozy bed – enjoying what would be a “full night” of sleep since Ringo managed to sleep through the night. (yay!)

500 seconds I was munching on a tarragon chicken salad sandwich while reading HuffPost.

500 posts ago, I posted my first blog entry, circa March 19, 2004.

Here’s to the next 500!

By reading this blog, one would probably not know that there is a 2nd child in the house and I feel like I can only use the “2nd child” excuse for so long.

So here’s a few things you didn’t (or actually did) know about Ringo.

  • There is no doubt in anyone’s mind that he is The Husband’s child.
  • Ringo gets a big kick out of playing “chicken” with Peanut in the hallway. It cracks him up to no end, but gives the adult holding him a sore back.
  • Favorite fruit to eat (as of today) = bananas
  • Favorite tuber to eat (as of today) = sweet potatoes
  • Eyes are still blue!
  • Though he LOVES to eat (often), he’s still only in the 10%ile
  • He’s a roll to right kind of guy
  • Ringo HATES the Bumbo and thinks sitting is for sissies.
  • He’s a ladies man in the making: It was either his 2-month or 4-month check-up and time for vaccinations…I laid him down on the table, little legs exposed, ready for the inoculations. Cried and screamed when it happened…as I went to pick him up, he stopped crying and gave the nurses a huge smile over my shoulder. They, of course, all gushed over him, making him smile even more.
  • He’s one of the cutest little munchkins I’ve ever seen!

(A day late, sorry!)

So, I’ve made it…I’ve completed six weeks of the C25k program!

If someone had told me that, in 6 weeks, I’d be running/jogging for 25 minutes straight – I’d laugh my own arse off.

But that 6 weeks was yesterday, and I did run/jog for 25 minutes straight and felt good. (Once I can get time of the run down, I’ll work on distance…)

The other night, knowing I had this workout coming up, I trimmed my playlist to help ensure that I’d complete the run:

Seven Nation Army – The White Stripes
Don’t Stop the Music – Rihanna
Into the Hollywood Groove – Madonna f/Missy Elliot
Sexyback – Justin Timberlake f/Timbaland
Kill the Lights – Britney Spears
Let’s Get It Started – The Black Eyed Peas
Mr. Brightside – The Killers
Carry Out – Timbaland f/Justin Timberlake

Some of it is old, some of it new – but these usually are my go-to-artists.

After 6 weeks of various playlists, I’ve come to decide that my walk-up song – you know, the song that plays when a baseball player comes up to bat? – is Fighter by Christina Aguilera. The lyrics are enough to keep me going.

What are your go-to tunes? Any recommendations?

(ps – I promise a non-fitness post soon!)

My friend D, who had had kidlet #2 about 7 months prior to Ringo’s birthday, told me that, amongst other things, the second time around she felt more motivated to get back to her pre-pregnancy shape.

So true.

I was so eager to start working out, or at least do more than neighborhood/dog park walks, my 6 week postpartum appointment couldn’t come soon enough.

It was around then (6 weeks post…) when I re-discovered the c25k running program. A 9-week program that’s designed to get one running 5k (or 30 minutes) in 9 weeks. I had tried to follow it before, but thanks to the iPhone app, I don’t need to keep looking at my watch, while trying to remember if I was supposed to walk for 3 minutes or run for 8.

If you follow me on Twitter, you know that I’m about 5 weeks into the program and holding my own.

Though I’m really, very eager to get the poundage off and get back into a healthier shape, I gave myself an easy goal: run a 5k Thanksgiving weekend. To keep me motivated for this run, I’ve enlisted The Husband and Da Brah to run it with me.

The latest running workout was…daunting, to say the least. After weeks of alternating between running and walking, time came to run for 20 minutes…straight. For some reason, I thought I wasn’t ready for it, but I am happy to report that it really wasn’t so bad. Not bad at all. To keep me moving for 20 minutes, I focused on my posture, I focused on my breathing, I focused on my core (envisioning some sort of abdominal definition) and I focused on my motivation for all this fitness – Peanut and Ringo. I keep telling myself that if I take care of myself now, they won’t have to take as much care of me later on. Who knows if it’ll end up like that, but at least there is some truth to it.

So this running thing is nice and all, but I also need to work on overall fitness as well. Luckily, soon after I returned to work, HR was announced a 10-week summer fitness program. HR had contracted with a personal trainer to come and…well, train. A little bit of everything: cardio, strength, balance. The best part of all this is that my company is reimbursing me 75% of the cost when I complete the program! (I have to attend at least 6 sessions to be qualify for reimbursement.) I’m two weeks into that program and it has already twice handed me my ass on a platter.

The next session is tomorrow afternoon, so I expect to be completely sore on Friday. But it’s a good thing, right?
