Random bits of life

Bought the book last Sunday, finished it this past Friday at lunch. Good reads (obviously). S can’t get over how fast I read it. Well, I say it all depends on the book. (I finished The DaVinci Code within 24 hours!)

Yes, a major character does meet its fate, but you could tell who it was going to be within the first chapter or two.

Because everything ran late this weekend! Dinner plans friday night turned into a late dinner (9.30p) near Dolores Park.

Saturday, my cousin and her fiance sealed the deal and got themselves married on the Terrace at the newly remodeled Cliffhouse. She, too, was running late. Try, oh, about an hour. But it was fun times. Here are S + I hamming it up for the camera:

After the wedding, the families met in Chinatown for a celebratory dinner. (Bride and groom were running late…again.) It was fun, as Sylvain and I found ourselves at the kid’s cousins table. We entertained ourselves with stories and trying to decipher if the mushroom was really a mushroom or if it was a sea cucumber. Sylvain found out the hard way – yes it was a sea cucumber (which really aren’t cucumbers).

My family ended up back at our place for a few rounds of poker and ice cream.

Sunday, after we took Lucie for a swim at McLaren park, I was off to my other cousin’s baby shower. Again, running late, and arriving at the shower 1/2 hour after it’s scheduled start.

We capped off the day with a dinner of Chicken Florentine with polenta and an episode of Deadwood.

So…I was going through the Pottery Barn catalog and came across this:

Now, if you click here and scroll down to number 68.

Something tells me that someone in PB purchasing is a filipina or filipino. Though, I am glad to see that Filipino culture has made it into mainstream America.

From the forth coming issue of Vogue. Borrowed from here.

Probably, her best picture ever! I wonder if the chickens are really hers?

As promised, here’s Rachael Yamagata

and here’s Ray Lamontagne.

…does this look?

Since the pic was taken, we bought 2 more bags of bark and it seemed to cover the ground sufficiently. Tho, we need to trim the edge of the canvas.

Here’s Lucie helping Sylvain with the bark…

And here she is, not being so helpful…

S + I kicked off the weekend with a concert at the Warfield. We (inadvertently) caught the last few songs of Rachael Yamagata’s performance* and enjoyed the musical stylings of Ray Lamontagne*. During the Rachael’s performance, her backup guitarist had switched to his electric guitar and as the group had started the song, he breaks into this “rockin'” chord, riff, whatever it’s called. Rachael and the violinist, stop and display this amused, but “what the f***” look on their faces. It was mentioned that maybe he was resentful for having to perform all these chick-love-gone-wrong songs and as punishment he had to say “tampax” out loud. It was quite funny. I guess you had to be there. ;o) The show in all was great! We loved it!

*the new Rhapsody’s having some probs posting some tunes to movable type…i’ll post ’em laters.

Saturday, I had enlisted my mom and brother to help plant some plants and lay out the bark for our front yard. We miscalcuated the amount of bark we needed and so, for now, our front looks pretty sad. But it is an improvement from before. Later that evening, Yoli and Craig came over for dinner and games. I had prepared a simple cheese plate for starters…red potatoes with a parsely/dill/scallion butter…stracoto (pot roast) with porcini mushrooms…and berries and cream for dessert. It was my first ever pot roast and it came out quite well, I must say. The meat was just tender and falling apart…yum! We ended the evening with a friendly of Cranium…I’ll see if I can get Sylvain’s drawing of chocolate mousse posted – it just goes to show that we’re able to think how the other thinks…if that makes sense. ;o)

After dragging my lazy butt around this morning, I made it to Borders and picked up copy of The Half-Blood Prince, “the last one” according to the sales boy. Score! I also picked up a copy of Lucky mag, but couldn’t find Domino.

Oh! Lest I forget, we got our bedroom furniture! Thank goodness we bought the smaller dresser because it took up more space than we had anticipated. I’ll post pictures when our room is neat and tidy. ;o)

My FIRST GRAY HAIR was hiding in the back, underneath. Sigh…

It’s not really gray though…more like a white platinum. :o)

I have a penchant for keeping more than one book on my nightstand and pick up whatever I’m in the mood for.

blink.jpeg

Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking by Malcolm Gladwell – I’ve been hearing a lot about this author and his books. (Blink is actually Gladwell’s second book.) I’m only into the second chapter and it’s pretty intriguing. If you haven’t heard of it, in Blink Gladwell examines how people are able to make snap judgments. Right/correct ones, at that.

ella in europe.jpeg

Ella in Europe by Michael Konik – A dog sitting in Paris with the Tour Eiffel in the background? Of course, I had to get it. It’s actually the story of a Los Angeleno and his pooch Ella and their journey across Europe. I last left them off in Germany and though it’s a cool thing to be able to bring your pooch with you to all these spectacular places, it’s a bit tiring to hear how the author is still blown away that HIS dog is sitting here, peeing there, on a train…etc. Geared more towards the American dog owner, since a European one wouldn’t be phased by this at all.

french women.gif

French Women Don’t Get Fat by Mireille Guiliano – So far, I’ve learned to drink champagne (hmm, isn’t the author the CEO of Veuve-Cliquot?), frequent farmer’s markets, cook with what’s in season, and to not be afraid to spice things up, literally. There are some pretty good recipes in the book – I’ll let you know if I make any of them.

guide to elegance.jpeg

A Guide to Elegance by Genevieve Antoine Dariaux – It seems a bit dated in the beginning. Something about white gloves…anyway, it’s a nice book to have since elegance never goes out of style.

Soon to be added to the nightstand: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by JK Rowling
