Random bits of life

It’s a holiday Monday and I am up before 8am. Ugh.

So, Sylvain and I are preparing for Benedicte, Eric, Leo & Leeloo’s arrival Wednesday night. It’ll be fun and interesting for 2 1/2 weeks. At least a few of those days include a trip to Vegas. (Wahoo!)

Saturday, we were invited to a BBQ at Deborah & Joseph’s new (rented) pad in Palo Alto. It’s a great house with an enorme yard. Lucie had a blast running around all day – she didn’t have time to nap. She slept all night (and most of Sunday too!) Oh, at the BBQ, we met the craziest woman – just watch out for her series, “The Abby Show”. She tells it like it is and has a sense of humor about it. Also, a belated felicitations to Barbara & David on their recent nuptials!

Sunday we met one of our friends from France, Kequang, for a quickie brunch at Q before he flew back home to Paris. Spent most of the day napping or cooking or slipping on the wet floor and falling (Lucie’s drippings her from water bowl!).

Today, Memorial Day, we are venturing down to Sarah’s house for a pool party. Lucie will be tired tonight, once again. Just trying to take it easy before the family arrives. I cannot imagine how crazy it will be with two kids (3 going on 4, and a 7 month old) running around. It will be very endearing or an effective form of birth control. ;o)

Okay, getting a little girly here…

Dove Extra Volume Foam Conditioner. Hmm, a mousse-like conditioner that’s applied in the shower? Ladies (and gents), I’m here to report that this conditioner left my hair so soft and silky smooth. Just remember to shake well.

Looking for voluminous eyelashes? Well, look no further. Lancome has introduced a new mascara, Hypnose. (You may have seen it advertised in Daily Candy.) Anyhow, it lives up to the advertising. One coat is all you really need. I shudder to think what I would would look like with 3 coats of mascara.

Finally, Lush bath products. Tried my first bath melt last night – extrordinary! I was afraid to break out into rash because of my extra-sensitive skin, but since all the ingredients in their products are 99% natural, organic or even vegan…no problems whatsoever! The bath smelled so yummy, even Lucie wanted to jump in!

Happy Holiday weekend!

We didn’t get it.

Stupidly, I realized a few weeks ago that I never changed my federal and state withholding status from single to married. It makes a great difference in the paycheck, I find out. Hopefully the credit cards will be paid off sooner. ;o)

Still no word on our offer. Though there were 18 disclosures were out, there were only 9 offers (including ours) at 2.30p when Naomi dropped ours off. The deadline was at 3pm.

Last night, I had a craving for Top Ramen. (When was the last time you had Top Ramen?) To my surprise, Sylvain had no idea what it was and had his first bowl last night. (And he ate it!) He knew of Cup o’ Noddles, but not ramen. High in sodium, but was on my list of top cheap college living food, next to mac and cheese. I think that he gorged himself on nutella (yum…). I suppose they’re equally as bad.

Yah, so we put an offer on a house today! Crazy! It was the house in outer Parkside with the center patio, deep lot, 2 blocks from the beach. I’ll be back with the good or bad news later…

From today’s Matier & Ross column in the SF Chronicle:

We couldn’t make this up: San Francisco cops got a call the other day from a Public Works street-cleaning team that couldn’t get around a couple of passed-out inebriates at Mason and Market streets.

Sgt. Joe Garrity arrived, called for a van to take the drunks to a shelter and started to wake up everyone for the ride. He noticed that one of the drunks was
sleeping on a leather jacket and using a motorcycle helmet as a pillow.

A little odd, but what the heck. It was the Tenderloin, where things are always a little odd.

Garrity managed to get the drunk, whose name was Rick, to stand up — although not very steadily.

Everything was going fine until the van arrived. Then Rick started getting belligerent, telling Garrity, “I’m not going anywhere without my bike. ”

“What bike?” Garrity asked.

“That one,” Rick said, pointing to a Harley-Davidson parked in the middle of the sidewalk.

“That’s yours?” the incredulous Garrity asked.

“Yep, that’s Rick’s bike,” said one of the drunk’s friends.

The bike didn’t have any plates on it, so Garrity called in a quick check of its vehicle ID.

Sure enough, the 2003 Sportster 1200 was indeed registered to Rick.

Rick then told Garrity that he’d just bought the Harley from the Dudley Perkins dealership in San Francisco for $7,000 — and that he’d made the money panhandling on the street.

“It took me three years,” Rick said proudly.

Yesterday I was on the phone with my friend Dani. We were chatting and I mentioned that Sylvain and I are heading over to France for the winter holidays. The conversation went a little something like this…

D: Is it your soonest trip? No wait, that doesn’t sound right.

K: Right. I know what you mean. It’ll be our most soonest trip to France? Most soonest, that doesn’t sound correct either.

D: Geez, what’s the word for that?

K: Our most upcoming trip? Just an upcoming trip?…

Grammar issues from two UCSD graduates. Maybe we should have studied English? ;o)

Yes, we are planning to celebrate Xmas and the such at Chez Rebaud. I hear good things about the holidays in France – maybe “Manou”, his paternal grandmother, can give me tips on how to improve on my buche du noel. Am not sure if we’ll be there for New Year’s – but if you have nothing better to do, come join us! How fun would that be?!

If you’re in the mood for a wacky, original, non-computer animated movie, see Sylvain Chomet’s Les Triplettes de Belleville. The plot seems a bit odd: a Tour de France cyclist is kidnapped and it is up to his clubfooted grandmother and their dog, Bruno, to rescue him.

Happy weekend!

He’s a one year old Labradoodle!

Yay for Massachusetts! The first state in the US to allow gay marriages. One would think that CA would be right on MA’s coattails…

Went house hunting again yesterday. Found two cute homes – one with views and one two blocks from the beach. One home that we visited had sweeping views of Glen Canyon and the East Bay. Truly breathtaking! However, as I stepped onto the balcony – there was a small sign that said something to the effect of “Balcony was constructed with a slight downward slope to allow water runoff.” Umm, ya. Should have left the house as soon as I had read that. Doesn’t the small space between the slats of wood allow for water runoff? I suppose not. Cross that house off the list. And to supplement the sloped (totally) unsafe balcony, we visited a house that was seriously built crooked! (Probably why it was dirt cheap!) The whole house sloped a little to the west. The showing agent blamed it on the drunken Irishmen who most likely built the home.

Our friends, Anu & Iran got married this past Saturday. A quaint and beautiful ceremony in the Rose Garden in GG Park and a quaint and fun reception at the Swedish-American hall in SF. They are probably now en route to Iceland for their 2 week honeymoon. Much love and luck to them both.
